I love small communities where people still feel like neighbors, and Waxahachie, Texas still shares that great small town feeling. And one of it’s most beautiful attractions can be seen in during July, with the blooming of all of the local crape myrtles … which is no surprise since Waxahachie has been designated the Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas.
Despite being a smaller town, Waxahachie is conveniently located near Dallas, so residents always have the best of both worlds – small town comfort and big-city access.
Waxahachie has the only HEB grocery store in the area. If you’re not from Texas and are looking at moving here, you may not realize how big of a benefit this is. But take it from us Texans … it’s important! Like many other locals, even from nearby towns, I visit this store regularly.
Waxahachie is a university town as well, called home by Southwestern Assemblies of God University, a private, non-profit 4-year university. Much like smaller towns allows residents to feel like neighbors, this small university offers very personalized education.
Waxahachie’s Downtown Merchants Association has created a very cute downtown area and historical district filled with boutiques, antiques, coffee shops, and a small-town main street. Downtown also holds the annual Crape Myrtle Festival and the Texas Country Reporter Festival. Every year, Historic Waxahachie, Inc. hosts a Christmas Tour of Homes, allowing the community to view some of these most beautiful preserved pieces of history.
Waxahachie is also home to the historical Ellis County Courthouse.
